If your reach has dropped, engagement feels unpredictable, or your content isn’t landing like it used to, you’re not imagining it.
Social media algorithms have changed again!
In 2026 Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook are no longer just measuring likes they’re looking for and measuring value, relevance, and user experience. Vanity metrics are no longer an accurate measurement of relevance or that your content is hitting its mark.
Pet brands that can adapt quickly will grow because of the changes!

Meaningful engagement matters more than likes.....
Platforms now prioritise:
Watch time
Saves
Shares
DMs
Repeat views
Likes still matter, but far less than before.
Translated, this means that a cute dog photo might get likes, but it would be much better to post a helpful, emotional, or shareable post.
Think about the problems that your target audience are trying to solve, then use these problems to create hooks.
Your Content is Shown to a Small Number of Non-Followers First
Your content is now often tested on new audiences before your own followers.
This means smaller accounts can outperform larger ones if their content performs well.
You don't need a big following to grow, you just need strong content. This goes back to looking at what questions your audience need answering, how can you connect with them emotionally?
Short-Form Video is Still the Priority
Short-form video remains the most powerful format. You should always try to include a balanced mixture of
Less polished, more authentic
Less trend-chasing, more value
Mix refined video with behind the scene less polished styles to reach more while projecting a professioal appeal.
For pet brands your content needs to be real, authentic and relatable.

4. Social Media as a Search Engine
Lead by Gen Z, who prefer more visual, relatable content....
Users are actively searching for things like:
“Best dog food UK”
“Puppy training tips”
“Dog-friendly places near me”
This means every post should be treated as searchable content, not just social content.
Gen Z tends to trust:
Real people
First-hand experiences
Video demonstrations
Over:
Traditional websites
Corporate or overly polished content
For example, searching:
“best dog food for sensitive stomachs”
…on TikTok gives:
Reviews
Real dogs trying products
Honest opinions
That feels more trustworthy than a standard search result. There is a lean in towards peer reviewed products.
Encourage Conversations
Comments, shares, dwell time, saves are more valuable than ever. Its easy to lose sight of the fact that social media is social. Interestingly, it was first introduced to connect friends, support online conversations and to network. So go old school! Network, interact, start conversations....
Ask your audience:
“Has your dog ever done this?”
“What breed do you have?”
“Would you try this?”
You have just 3 seconds to encourage people to stay!
Don't waste the first 3 seconds of your video with overcomplicated header pages, pick your hooks wiseley!
Think of your first 3 seconds as your audition to feature on your target audiences feed. Put yourself in their shoes, what would make you pause for more?
Be Consistent
This doesn't mean posting every day! But you do need to show up regularly!
Algorithms reward consistency.
Even 2–3 high-quality posts per week can outperform inconsistent posting. So create a weekly and monthly framework of themes and topics to address to make sure that you never run out of inspiration. You can even then create a post teaser encouraging people to tune in in the next couple of days to hear about.......This then encourages conversions to followers!
Use a Mix of Content Formats
Different formats serve different purposes:
Reels → discovery
Carousels → saves
Stories → engagement
Longer videos → retention
A mix of formats helps maximise visibility.
Remember, The Algorithm Is Not Working Against You.....It Is Designed To Prioritise Content that Keeps The Platforms Members There For Longer. So Help the Platforms Help you!
